How to Remove “You may be a victim of software counterfeiting” Notification

Microsoft Office 2019, 2021

In this article I will help you to remove the notification “”GET GENUINE OFFICE” “You may be a victim of software counterfeiting. Avoid security risks and get genuine Office now” on office products such as Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.

First you need to run commander as administrator. This is how it’s done on Windows 11:

Type this (by copying and pasting into the commander):

cd “\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun”

Then type this:

OfficeC2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.13801.20266

What this is going to do is to run an update on your Office. Don’t worry about that update. It’s not a regular update, but a specific one. Let it run. That’s the first step into solving your issue. Just let it run, lean back … relax.

Right after the update, start an office software such as Word. Click on File/Account, and then disable Office Updates.

This is how it’s supposed to look:

You are done. Updates are disabled, the notification is gone.

The MS update failed. Is it a future-proof update, or perhaps out of date now?
