Since Microsoft doesn’t allow you to disable updates easily anymore — not even through simple registry tweaks or by turning off a single service — there is only one way to disable it: using a dedicated tool that blocks every avenue Windows uses to force updates.
So, before I explain more, you can download this free tool below. It has no trial, doesn’t need credit cards, it’s completely free… and it works with Windows 10 and Windows 11:
There is often little reason to constantly update Windows. For many users, modern Windows updates don’t actually improve the system; rather, they install unwanted bloatware and disrupt your workflow.
Let’s see if you qualify as a “Microsoft victim”:
- You had your system set up perfectly, and after a new update, new software and apps were force-installed for advertising purposes (like “Groove Music”, “Candy Crush”, new desktop wallpapers, and whatever junk Microsoft pushes).
- Your Windows settings might have been overwritten or reset to default. You had deactivated certain annoyances such as animations, transparency, or specific folder views—and found yourself having to do all of that again after an update.
- After an update, you find out that some system settings that were there before have just vanished.
- Your computer would not start after an update.
- You are a developer or power user who had some specific software installed, but Microsoft decided to automatically remove it.
- Any other Microsoft product installed on your PC, such as Office, got automatically updated too. You just got your Outlook or Word configured the way you wanted, and the next thing you know, annoying new features have appeared and you can’t get rid of them.
- Important features you were using just disappeared.
- You were working on something, on a tight deadline, or in a conference call with a client, and without asking you, Windows auto-shuts down, updates for an hour, and after rebooting, all your work is gone.
How to Disable Microsoft Windows Updates (The Modern Way)
There are a couple of tools out there that claim to disable Windows updates. However, caution is necessary since some of them tend to mislead users and install their own versions of bloatware, malware, and even trojans. Don’t just go out there into the wild west web and download anything that sounds like “Windows Update Disabler.”
In the past, many users relied on a tool called Sledgehammer. However, Sledgehammer is now outdated. Its user experience was also a little complicated, making uninstalls and re-enabling updates difficult in my opinion, and it is no longer the best solution, especially since Windows 11 made update-blocking even harder.
The Best Tool Available in 2026: Baze Windows Update Disabler
Why it works better than anything else. First of all, I programmed it 😊
Let’s get serios: Windows Update is not controlled by a single switch. Windows uses several services, scheduled tasks, and repair mechanisms to keep the update system active. Baze Windows Update Disabler takes a multi-layered approach to stop this. It applies policy settings to the registry, shuts down multiple update-related services (like the Update Orchestrator and Windows Update Medic Service), disables scheduled tasks, and creates its own background task to ensure Windows doesn’t quietly turn updates back on.
I have also build in a clean rollback feature. Before disabling anything, Baze Windows Update Disabler records your system’s exact configuration. If you ever decide you want to allow updates again, you just open the tool and click “Enable Windows Updates.” It will perfectly restore your previous registry settings, service startup modes, and scheduled tasks.
Just download it, run it, and click disable — no fuss, no buzz. Your PC is finally yours again.

Thank you for this service and program! Aside from having ZOOM interviews and other critical/time sensitive work interrupted by Windows “automatically” updating itself, I was particularly annoyed by all the useless (to me ) programs they kept dumping which I was unable to uninstall or delete (like their “store” which I am sure I want to shop in- NOT), taking up valuable space on my hard drive. All this slows down opening up and waiting for everything to load. You are a God-send! Hooray for the blessed Geeks who understand the nefarious ways of Bill Gates et al! Thank you! Merci beaucoup! Gracias! and all my gratitude!
OMG, I have been searching for something like this for MONTHS; I am SO sick of MS installing updates without my permission and INTERRUPTING important things with ‘installing updates’ when I have critical info or NO TIME to wait for their BS. Thank you so much for getting this out there: it will spread like wildfire to eliminate MS’s march of bloatware.
Thank you, this post litterally saved my old PC from Microsoft, as Windows Update was trying to force updates that were not compatible with my modded drivers which led to White Screens Of Death on boot.
